Facebook Touch
Facebook Touch is Facebook’s latest project, allowing Facebook users to run Facebook on a mobile device. Facebook Touch can be downloaded for free from the Facebook website here. Facebook’s touch aims to help Facebook make more money by getting more people using their product as often as possible; both this and making Facebook easier for first-time users who might find the regular Facebook website too daunting or too complicated are why Facebook has created Facebook Touch.
There are two main reasons that people would use Facebook Touch over regular Facebook:
- It is designed for mobiles/smartphones, so everything looks much more straightforward, and thus it’s easier than a regular computer screen, plus physical keyboard shortcuts mean you don’t need to hunt around for buttons.
- Facebook is hoping many Facebook first-timers use this version as it will be much easier to get used to Facebook than the standard Facebook website, which also means it is likely Facebook will make more money!
Sometimes Facebook Touch can feel like you’re not using Facebook at all, even though you are; for example, when you want to see if anyone has updated their status or liked your photo, you have to go into the app rather than just pressing a button on your phone. However, this isn’t that big an issue, and the Facebook touch mobile interface saves time in general because everything is so easy to find and use, plus there are no ads (as opposed to regular Facebook).
Facebook Touch is available on Apple devices and Android devices. In addition, Facebook Touch takes a lot less space than Facebook’s standard Facebook app, so Facebook is likely to get more users because Facebook Touch fixes that problem.
The Facebook touch interface allows you to see new updates in your news feed at the top of the screen, and then when you click on this update, you’ll be able to see what they have said and also reply straight away if necessary, which saves time; again, this makes Facebook easier for first-timers but also just quicker in general! Another good thing about Facebook touch is that photos are so easy to view, unlike Facebook’s regular app, which usually shows a tiny thumbnail of the image, and then you have to click it to look at it properly. Facebook touch allows you to see the whole photo straight away and in more detail, too, because Facebook touch loads the images faster than Facebook’s regular app or Facebook’s website.
Challenges with Facebook Touch
One problem with Facebook Touch is that messages are not grouped, so if someone has messaged you multiple times, they will all appear as separate messages on Facebook Touch; however, this is again better for first-timers who might find Facebook too tricky due to having lots of different categories that things can be found in. Another problem with Facebook Touch is that you cannot download videos from Facebook, so if your friends post many funny videos, Facebook touch won’t be able to download them. Facebook Touch also doesn’t notify you if you get a new message or time someone has updated their status; this is Facebook’s way of stopping Facebook from becoming too complicated for first timers, but it can be annoying sometimes when you want Facebook to tell you what’s happening!
Facebook Touch is designed for smartphones etc.; the Facebook Touch mobile interface looks similar to Facebook’s standard app on Apple devices, which means that Facebook users can still be Facebook users without worrying about learning how to use Facebook all over again. However, Facebook chose not to make an Android or Blackberry version of Facebook touch because they think people who have Android/Blackberry phones don’t spend as much time using Facebook as iPhone users do. So Facebook Touch is Facebook’s way of attracting new users who might not be Facebook users otherwise because Facebook Touch makes Facebook easier for first-timers to use and quicker for everyone else.
The Facebook touch mobile interface looks just like the standard Facebook app on Apple devices. Still, it is designed differently so that Facebook first-timers don’t get overwhelmed with lots of separate buttons/tabs. Which are more complicated than they need to be; basically, Facebook touch makes Facebook easier and quicker for everyone.
Facebook Touch is good news for new computer users as Facebook has made its website simpler without changing how it works. If you’re looking for an easy-to-learn social media, then look no further! However, experienced Facebook users might take a while to get used to Facebook touch because Facebook Touch is designed for Facebook first-timers. Still, it also has enormous advantages over Facebook’s regular Facebook app! Overall, Facebook Touch should be an instant hit. Facebook is already planning on releasing a Facebook Touch update for Android and Apple phones soon, which will inevitably increase their user base. If you don’t have a smartphone, then I recommend using the standard Facebook so that your friends can see updates about what you are doing or posting; overall, either option should provide endless hours of enjoyment.
The YouTube logo: a red-letter Y in a white rectangle.
YouTube is another social network, but this one doesn’t connect with Facebook. You can make an account on YouTube and find Facebook friends who have accounts there, but Facebook has no direct connection with YouTube.
If you want to use YouTube and Facebook simultaneously, you need to make a new Facebook profile or set up a second Facebook account. But, it’s not hard at all! Just follow these instructions:
- Go onto +Google+ Emoticons, log into your Facebook account if asked to do so, and click the link for creating a Facebook profile. If it doesn’t work, try logging out and then into Facebook again before going back to Google+ Facebook Emoticons; Facebook sometimes logs you out by itself.
- Facebook will then ask if you want to take a tour – click ‘no’ because we don’t need one!
- Go to the top of your Facebook profile and open up “About” in the left-hand column. Scroll down and look for the link next to “Contact Information.” Click this, and Facebook will open up a page to edit your personal information such as name, address, and phone number (although do not change your email address or password here!).
- Once that’s done, go back to Facebook by clicking on ‘Home,’ scroll back up to the top left corner again (where it says ‘Facebook’), then click on ‘Account Settings. Facebook will open up a page where you can edit your Facebook account settings.
- Go to the bottom of this page and look for the link that says “Show my Facebook Profile on my XXXX Page.” Click on it, and Facebook will show you an option to create a Facebook Page (which is just another Facebook profile except it doesn’t have access to all of Facebook’s features – but we don’t need one).
- Fill in all the details for your new Facebook Page as requested by Facebook.
Now that you’ve got two Facebook profiles running at once, if you want to use both, then let them sync with each other, so they’re updated together; do this from your Facebook Page, which was created when you followed Facebook’s instructions. Then, Facebook Page will connect with Facebook Profile. Facebook will also connect with Google+ – but Facebook Page won’t relate directly to YouTube because you don’t have an official YouTube account associated with that Facebook profile. Don’t worry, though! If you follow these steps after using your first Facebook profile:
- Log out of Facebook Page (which was created when you followed Facebook’s instructions), log into your regular Facebook account instead, then navigate back to the same page as in step 6 above but this time from within Facebook (not from Google+). This will create a second Facebook profile inside your regular one; do not log out of this new one!
- Now log back into the initial Facebook Page created when you followed Facebook’s instructions; this will create a Facebook Page that is separate from Facebook Profile.
- Sync Facebook Page with Facebook Profile, so they’re both updated together (under Facebook Account Settings, click the link for “Edit My Facebook Timeline and Tasks”).
- Now log out of Facebook, but do not log back into Facebook Page! Instead, login into your new second Facebook profile.
- Go to www.facebook.com/YouTube6 – it will redirect you to YouTube’s website as usual and ask if you want to make a new YouTube account or sign in with an existing one; choose whichever you prefer, but I recommend making a new one (you can always go back and delete it later).
- On YouTube, once you’ve logged in, feel free to click the “Home” link at the top of Facebook’s Facebook page! This will take you back to Facebook, which is now a Facebook Page rather than a Facebook Profile.
- Go into Facebook and scroll back up to where it says Account Settings. Click Edit My Facebook Timeline and Tasks (which you edited earlier), then click Show My Facebook Page on my XXXX Page.
Now return to YouTube’s website by clicking on the ‘Y’ logo in Facebook’s left-hand column; after this is connected, continue with step 7 again but this time returning to your first Facebook profile that was created when you followed Facebook instructions.
Both your Facebook Pages and Facebook Profiles are connected with four social networks through Facebook: Facebook, YouTube, and Facebook. That’s two Facebook profiles, plus two Facebook pages in total! If you want to use both of them simultaneously, then make sure your Facebook Page syncs with your Facebook Profile (you don’t need to do this for your Facebook Page because it’s already a separate profile). Then create a new YouTube account through your initial Facebook page that was created when you followed Facebook’s instructions; log into this new YouTube account and sync it with your second Facebook profile, which was also created when you followed Facebook’s instructions. Finally, allow each of these three accounts accesses to Facebook, Facebook Page, and Facebook Profile.
You can get Facebook Touch on your Android device by downloading Facebook from the Google Play Store.
After you have Facebook, Facebook will automatically update to Facebook Touch for you and show Facebook Touch in the same column as Facebook. Facebook Touch is Facebook on Facebook, so Facebook Touch doesn’t show up on Facebook! Facebook Touch will be the rightmost column. If Facebook isn’t showing you Facebook Touch when you open it, go to Google+ Facebook Emoticons and check the box that says “Automatically update Facebook with posts from Google+” (or change it to say ‘no’).
If your device won’t let you download apps from the Play Store like Galaxy S3, HTC One X, or Sony Xperia ZL, then use www.facebook.com/touch instead of downloading an app called Facebook – FBT is a mobile-optimized version of Facebook for Android devices that uses less data than downloading Facebook from the Play Store (it’s recommended by Facebook too!). In addition, Facebook Touch will automatically update in Facebook if you change the URL to Facebook Touch from Facebook (like www.facebook.com/touch). It’s faster, too!
Facebook Touch Compatibility
Facebook touch is compatible with Android OS and iOS (iPhone/iPad); Facebook touch is also compatible with Facebook Messenger and Facebook Pages. Facebook touch can be used in a browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. Facebook Touch has been made on Facebook, so this is why Facebook Touch compatibility works the way it does. If you want to get help on Facebook touch, ask for Facebook touch help in your Facebook account settings or email facebook@fb.com. You must have a compatible social media app for Facebook touch to work correctly. Facebook’s app has full support for Facebook Touch because it was made by the same people who made Facebook, so any similar apps are going to work well with Facebook Touch too – but if you use an incompatible app, then there won’t be anything wrong with that either because Facebook Touch isn’t a Facebook feature which Facebook controls – Facebook touch is used by the app developers who want to add Facebook-like elements into their apps.
About Facebook
Facebook is a social network that connects people – Facebook users can add friends and share updates or photos. Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, Eduardo Saverin, and Andrew McCollum. Facebook has more than 1 billion active users per month as of July 2013. In addition, Facebook has about 790 million mobile monthly active users as of September 30th, 2014 – that means mobile devices like smartphones and tablets account for 51% of all Facebook traffic!
In August 2007, Facebook acquired Instagram for $US1 billion – Facebook has since made nearly $US2 billion in profit from selling ads on Instagram. Facebook-owned WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook Paper as well in 2014. Facebook acquired Oculus VR for $US2 billion, which may be the most important deal of Facebook’s history. The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset could change gaming permanently!
Facebook is based in Palo Alto (Silicon Valley), USA. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, who remains president of Facebook; he also owns a lot of Facebook shares himself! If you’re interested in setting up your own business, joining Facebook is worth considering, with over 955 million active users as of December 2012.
Facebook bought Instagram for an estimated USD 1 billion on April 9th, 2013. Facebook’s stock increased by 2.4% on April 9th, 2013, because of the Facebook Instagram deal – Facebook stands to make up to $US2 billion from advertising on Instagram!
Facebook Advertising Business Model Journey
Facebook has an incredible advertising business model; Facebook runs ads for businesses and then offers Facebook users a free service in return (like Facebook itself or Facebook Messenger). The best part is, Facebook earns more money when you use Facebook and click on those ads! Sound interesting? Sign up for Facebook Ad Manager here.
In 2009 Google said it would start incorporating social signals into its search algorithm – that means your Google my business activity can influence your ranking in Google searches now! On January 11th, 2014, Microsoft announced that Bing was using Facebook photos as part of their search results. Facebook’s mobile advertising platform Facebook Audience Network is getting better and could become Facebook’s most lucrative business yet. Facebook saw a $US2 billion profit for the whole of 2013 on revenue up 49% to $US7.9 billion – Facebook has nearly 1.3 billion active users as of June 2014!
In November 2013, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for an estimated $US19 billion USD; Facebook also owns Instagram and Oculus VR to make this deal worth over $US22 billion! Facebook Messenger has more than 900 million monthly active users as of December 2013. Twitter has 284 million monthly users, so Facebook Messenger must be pretty popular now compared with Twitter (which only allows 140 characters)!
Did you know that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg started at Facebook by writing new Facebook platform software to help Facebook grow when it got popular? But, unfortunately, the mark had to build Facebook’s software himself as Facebook didn’t have any software engineers at that time!
Facebook can track the money you’ve spent on deals through their Facebook Offers service and use this information to show relevant ads on Facebook. Facebook has filed for a patent relating to online banking services too. Your bank is probably aware of all your spending anyway, so there’s no need to worry about Facebook tracking your purchases – though some people might not like the idea of Facebook accessing their finances and showing them ads based on their income.
In March 2014, Twitter changed its rules regarding third-party developers like Tweetbot (a top-rated app for iPhones), forcing Twitter to remove Tweetbot’s ability to display tweets in the chronological order that Twitter users prefer. Facebook Messenger has over 900 million monthly active users as of December 2013; Facebook Inc owns Facebook Messenger even though Facebook doesn’t directly run it – perhaps Facebook will start showing ads on Facebook Messenger one day? Finally, Facebook Paper is a news and social networking app that Facebook Inc bought before releasing Facebook Paper to the public! That’s worth bearing in mind whenever you read about Facebook acquiring new businesses. Often, these acquisitions are so that Facebook has something to release itself after buying up the competition.
Engineers and developers often work part-time at home as freelancers for extra money (using Upwork, for example). Even software engineers are doing this because there aren’t enough exciting programming jobs out there! For example, Facebook has the following job listings on their Facebook Careers page: Facebook is looking for a Facebook User Experience Designer and a Facebook Security Engineer. This shows how Facebook hires staff for positions relevant to all of Facebook’s products, not just one specific role – long-time Facebook users would remember when you could only log into Facebook with your email address (and not support@facebook.com)!
Facebook used to run an internship program called Facebook University which ran from 2010-2012, where interns worked on exciting projects at the company’s HQ in Palo Alto, California (or other offices around the world). The final graduating class of Facebook University students did internships in London and Cape Town before the graduation day at Menlo Park. Every year Facebook receives thousands of university applications from around the world. Facebook recruiters review these applications and invite the most promising for interviews with Facebook staff. Facebook has a Facebook University Facebook page too! Facebook is a public company (stock market listed), so it’s interesting to see how Facebook hires people across all departments, not just within its product teams.
Facebook has been through a few different designs in its lifetime – did you know that Facebook used to have profiles called pages instead of your profile? You can even view an archive of some of Facebook’s old designs here. Early versions of Facebook didn’t allow apps or games, Facebook used to open in a web browser, and Facebook’s Marketplace was called Facebook Gifts. Facebook has had some exciting experiments, too – Facebook Beta, for example, allowed Facebookers to send messages and chat with each other long before Facebook Messenger or Facebook Chat became popular! It also showed you which of your friends were online at the time (this feature only lasted for one month, though).
Overall, how many Facebook users are there in total? Are there more men or women on Facebook? Are most of the Facebook audience located in America? This article answers these questions here.
Do you have any confused friends who think that Twitter’s @mentions work like Facebook’s Facebook messages? This post explains Facebook’s @mentions here.
Facebook has a Facebook Privacy Page for Facebook users to understand how Facebook protects data. It covers Facebook’s use of the information you share with applications and websites when using Facebook login here.
The Facebook Timeline feature was launched in 2011. This interactive story shows how Facebook brought together many of the features available at the time (and some that weren’t) into one revamped timeline where you could choose to display specific actions that all took place on Facebook over time: http://buildthetimeline.com.
Facebook also has a Facebook App Center, which is Facebook’s place to showcase Facebook apps (in Facebook, of course), view app ratings and reviews, find special deals for Facebook users. Facebook developers can submit their apps to be listed in Facebook’s App Center using this form here. Click here to summarizes how Facebook makes money from its popular platform. Facebook helps small businesses too – you can use Facebook to open up a shop, sell your products on Facebook or promote your business with an App like Pages Manager Facebook does a lot to help users and customers, Facebook provides support for Facebook users on Facebook itself (in the Facebook Help Centre), Facebook also includes support via email: facebook@fb.com. Suppose you have a more complicated issue or complaint about Facebook that cannot be resolved by contacting Facebook directly. In that case, you might want to get your national data protection regulator, which you can find here.
Facebook has its app on Facebook, of course too – Facebook Messenger is used to messaging other people on Facebook, and it’s where people go to chat with their friends using Facebook Chat. In addition, you can ‘like’ Facebook pages via Facebook’s Facebook Page app, and you can also play Facebook games in Facebook’s Facebook Games app.
I think that Facebook does a lot to help us with our lives purely through Facebook itself – Facebook has some pretty amazing apps which enable users to connect with friends, family, and others, Facebook Messenger is one of the best ways to chat (via your phone or web browser) and Facebook also helps people run their businesses better too!
